Weekend Activities in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Call Barbara to create your own customized weekend, doing what really interests you.  You don’t have to fit into a mold.  Your weekend will be as restful or as active as you wish.

  • Relax - Spend your evenings sipping wine on the porch under our star filled skies or in front of the living room propane log stove. 

  • Horseback Riding: Ride in our luminous hills with Sandra Cartwright-Brown or Moody Aylor, or at the Marriott Ranch, just minutes away.

  • Catered farm house dinner:  Elegant gourmet dining in your own home away from home.  Plan your dinner in advance with  personal chefs whose skills are very well known in the region. Pick up your wines at the vineyards during the afternoon and return home to dine on Versace Primavera china by candle light at The House on Water Street.  Food choices: traditional American, European, exotic Ethiopian and Korean (depending on availability of chefs)

  • Farms - Bring your cooler.Visit Heritage Hollow Farm Store to stock up on grass fed beef and lamb, pastured pork and eggs from free range chickens.  Just go over the footbridge  over the Thornton River to the store.  Drive across the road to Waterpenny Farm for farm fresh organic produce in season.   http://heritagehollowfarms.net  and  www.waterpennyfarm.com Excellent meat is also available at Belle Meade , just 7 miles from the house.

  • Spa - Start or wrap up your day with Swedish or deep tissue massages, complete with a hot stone treatment, either at the house or at the nearby spa.. Not into massage? Get facials, manicures, pedicures or other body treatments.

  • Photography - Visit Old Rag Photography, a cooperative gallery, located in River District Arts, just down the road from the house..  There you will find the work of my husband,  Ray Boc, who has wonderful photos of Sperryville and the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Ray is also available for private workshops for you and your friends/family.

  • Antiques -  Copper Fox Antiques is a dynamic group of dealers located in the old apple packing house just down the road from the house.  This is a real treasure trove of antiques and especially fine dealers... 30,000 square feet of treasures. The Historic School House in Sperryville is home to Double Eagle antiques and Lighting and is filled too the brim with fine antiques.  Ginger Hill Antiques is minutes away on route 211.  There are two roadside dealers on route 211 for three seasons..  

  • Bird lovers - The yard of this house is filled with birds! Birds nest everywhere in my planters and trees It is just minutes to a nearby Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail.

  • Mountains - Hike on your own in the Shenandoah National Park, just minutes away.   Or, take wine and cheese for a romantic sunset at one of the overlooks. www.shenandoah.national-park.com

  • Art - Visit Long View Gallery on Main Street . www.longviewgallery.com .  Walk to the other end of Water Street  to River District Arts,  Middle Street Gallery and Old Rag Photography to find fine art in all media.

  • Movies - Movies (top rated) are the first Friday of the month at The Theater in Little Washington.  This is a quaint theater that you will love.  www.raac.org/02_raacfilm.html

  • Live theatre- www.theatre-washington-va.com/  Check out this web site for a schedule of live performances at The Theatre. The Theatre presents a wide variety of professional musical and dramatic performances, usually on weekends and often for one or two performances only

  • Food -NY style pizza, stromboli and calzone are available for carry-out from Rudy's Pizzeria just around the corner. The  chef makes dough daily and uses all fresh ingredients.  Perfect for a casual dinner at the house or a late night snack.

  • Food - The Corner Store, a step back in time, has both gourmet and basic food, excellent meat and fish, fresh vegetables, gourmet cheeses, a wonderful selection of wine  and over 100 varieties of beer. Roy's Orchard and Market is unique...a series of quonset huts with EVERYYHING you need.

  • Shopping - New shops have opened in the historic Schoolhouse.  Just walk over the footbridge, across the river, from the house. You will be delighted with what you find at Coterie, The Knit Wit Shop, Double Eagle Antiques and Lighting, Comfort for air  Trade items and organic clothing - on Main Street next to the Post Office.
  • Coffee - Visit Central Coffee Roasters to purchase your supply of freshly roasted coffee from around the world. Located on route 211, just about one mile west of The House on Water Street.  www.centralcoffeeroasters.com/

  • Ice cream - Eat an ice cream cone from Burgers N Things, over the footbridge, across the river from the house.  Go to Roy's Orchard in Old Hollow to buy quarts and half-'gallons of creamy Trickling Springs Dairy Ice Cream in about 25  flavors.

  • Nightlife: Headmaster's Pub with live music every weekend, The Blue Rock Inn, just minutes away, or Griffin Tavern in Flint Hill, have music on weekends

  • Drumming - Uplift your spirits and reduce stress with group drumming. No musical experience needed. Just you and your family/friends, making your own song; instruments provided by instructors.

  • Herbal Magic - Make a short trip to a nearby yurt and mix up some potions (an aphrodisiac elixir, perhaps?).
